If you’ve seen Netflix’s adaptation of Sweet Tooth, it may come as little surprise that the streaming giant renewed the program. And yet, a second season order for the program — which Netflix announced Thursday morning — is still an accomplishment.
Based on the Vertigo comic book by Jeff Lemire, it focuses on Gus (Christian Convery), a hybrid deer-boy in search of his mother and the secret of a worldwide plague which wiped out a lot of humanity and forced it to give birth to hybrid children with various animal-like characteristics. Along for the journey are Jeppard (Nonso Anozie), a former hunter of hybrids, and Bear (Stefania LaVie Owen), a teen girl dedicated to protecting Gus from Jep’s potential treachery.
The second season will consist of eight 1-hour episodes with Executive Producer/Writer/Director and Showrunner Jim Mickle returning. “It’s been equally thrilling and heartwarming to experience how people around the world have been falling in love with our deer-boy,” he said in a statement. “We couldn’t be more excited to continue our collaboration with Netflix and keep following Gus and his friends on their extraordinary journey.”
Susan Downey, Robert Downey Jr., Amanda Burrell, and Linda Moran return as executive producers, as does Evan Moore. Arrow veteran Beth Schwartz, who served as co-showrunner with Mickle in Season 1, will not return as her participation was always planned to extend over just the first year. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina‘s Oanh Ly, meanwhile, joins up as a co-executive producer.
It is unclear when the second season will air, but late 2022 isn’t a bad guess.
