Given how popular Riverdale‘s musical episodes are, you’d think there’d be something in next week’s trailer to indicate it’s a musical. Instead, without knowing next week’s episode is titled “Next to Normal,” the promo only confirms that Alice (Mädchen Amick) will be the focus and that Jughead (Cole Sprouse) is going to be meeting Tabitha’s parents (though they’re still not dating).
In some other big news this week, the Lonely Highway Killers have been identified and it’s actually satisfying!?! Like, kudos to Riverdale‘s writer’s room, truly, because coming up with an answer to that mystery (and figuring out a way to link it to the Mothmen)? That can’t have been easy.
Granted, because it was strung out for so long the impact of bringing back characters like Squeaky (Skylar Radzion) and Old Man Dreyfus (John Prowse) was definitely lost. Also, while it was a relief that Tabitha (Erinn Westbrook) and Betty’s Lonely Highway walks weren’t the thing that solved the case, making out like Betty (Lili Reinhart) needed a man to solve the case? Not cool.
Some other thoughts on this week’s episode:
- Hard to say which action sequence was cooler: Archie (KJ Apa) knocking Chad (Chris Mason) out with a trash can lid, Veronica (Camila Mendes) knocking out her dad (Mark Consuelos), or Veronica telling her smart house to play Wagner before confronting Chad
- Between Polly’s kids and now Toni’s baby, Riverdale is officially content to avoid casting child actors/babies on the show.
- For the most part, Riverdale has moved away being a show about high school, but it could be one again, especially if the scene between Fangs (Drew Ray Tanner) and Toni (Vanessa Morgan) — two queer characters trying to help a queer student come out — is any indication
- Anyone else wish they could be a fly on the wall to know what Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) was writing for her twelve commandments?
Riverdale airs Wednesdays on The CW.
