After what Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn called a “strange & long & at times challenging journey,” production on the film is finally underway. Gunn celebrated by releasing a photo of some of the film’s cast, which inadvertently revealed Chukwudi Iwuji as a new recruit.
It’s been a strange & long & at times challenging journey to get here, but the obstacles along the way have only made this moment more blissful. Back on set with my Guardians family for the first day of shooting #gotgvol3 pic.twitter.com/DrF8ZV8bvz

In a subsequent post, Gunn confirmed Iwuji’s participation, writing, “After working with him on #Peacemaker I wasn’t about to let go of one of the best actors I’ve ever worked with – so I gave him the role most every big name actor in Hollywood wanted.” It’s unclear what that role is, exactly, but knowing Gunn’s habit of deep comic book pulls, it will likely be something surprising and compelling. He made Ratcatcher II part of The Suicide Squad‘s heart, after all.
Beyond the new addition, the film sees the return of Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, and Sean Gunn as the on-set Rocket and Kraglin. Also along for the ride: Will Poulter (as seen in Gunn’s photo) as the long-promised Adam Warlock. As with most Marvel films, the plot is unknown, but it will likely follow up on the Guardians’ presence in Thor: Love and Thunder.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is slated for release on May 23rd, 2023.
