Disney+ Day: ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Sizzle Reel Teases “Since …”

by Erik Amaya

Despite it being a series long in development — it was even a movie at one point — Obi-Wan Kenobi avoided a teaser on Disney+ Day, opting instead for a sizzle reel made available to the press and Disney+ subscribers on Friday.

The preview consisted mainly of footage from Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, concept paintings, and a few interview moments with star Ewan McGregor and director Deborah Chow. But the most interesting moment came when both discussed the return of Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader. A concept painting of Vader and Obi-Wan once again fighting crossed the screen, indicating a second climatic fight between the two.

Or, as Vader himself teased back in the original Star Wars, the last time he felt Obi-Wan’s presence “since …”

For nearly two decades (and longer if you read the Star Wars novelizations), “Since…” was presumed to be the two Jedis final confrontation on a volcano planet (which came to be known as Mustafar) twenty years prior to the raid on the Death Star. But the phrasing of “Since …” was purposely obscure in the original film, leaving a second fight between Vader and Obi-Wan possible.

Well, if you ignore Vader’s subsequent mention of being “the learner” the last time he saw Obi-Wan. But is he really even Obi-Wan’s pupil in Revenge of the Sith? The program itself is set roughly ten years after Revenge of the Sith, a largely unexplored middle period between the Prequel Trilogy and the Original film. It will be interesting to see how the series resolves this piece of (presumed) Star Wars history.
