Composer Michael Giacchino is joining the ranks of Marvel directors.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Giacchino will helm Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ Halloween special. According to previous reports, the one-hour special starring Gael García Bernal and Laura Donnelly will feature Marvel’s Werewolf by Night. It is believed Bernal will play the recently introduced Jake Gomez version of the character. Created by Taboo, Benjamin Jackendoff, and Scot Eaton, Gomez is of Hopi descent, and comes to his lupine condition via a family curse. Though his werewolf tendencies are more or less controlled, he went feral in his debut story when he discovered the company he worked for was kidnapping people from the nearby reservation. From rumors last summer, it seems Marvel Studios has been developing a Gomez-centered project for sometime.
Giacchino’s music can be heard in theaters right now as he gave The Batman its genuinely impressive score. But he has been branching out in recent years, both writing and directing the short film Monster Challenge and helming the animated Star Trek: Short Treks episode “Ephraim and Dot.”
The introduction of any Werewolf by Night also invites questions about March 30th’s Moon Knight. The character originally debut in an issue of Werewolf by Night and wolf imagery continues on into Mr. Knight’s stories even to this day. In fact, trailers for the upcoming Disney+ series suggest he will battle werewolves at some point. Will any of them turn out to be Gomez? Time will tell, but with more overtly supernatural characters entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we can’t help but wonder if some loose take on the Spirits of Vengeance will supplant the Avengers in an upcoming crossover film.
The untitled Marvel Halloween special is set to being production later this month and, presumably, stream in October.
