Preview: A Complicated Brazilian Queer Coming Of Age Tale – ‘Blessed Cure’ By Mário César

by Richard Bruton

Coming to Kickstarter this spring, Soaring Penguin Press brings us Mário César’s award-winning “complicated queer coming of age story,” set in Brazil.

Blessed Cure promises to be a hard-hitting and brutally honest tale of a closeted gay man’s life from the 1960s to 2017 with author and artist Mário César using his personal story to focus on country-wide issues, looking at the evolving attitudes to LGBTQ+ issues in Brazil.

Previously published at Webtoons as an award-winning webcomic, Blessed Cure tells the life of Acácio do Nascimento, growing up in Brazil and having to face being gay in a country dominated by religion and anti-queer attitudes.

Blessed Cure is the second of Soaring Penguin’s publications, following 2021’s Black by Tobias Taitt and Anthony Smith, to focus on marginalised identities in contemporary settings. Like Black, Blessed Cure tells an honest and difficult tale of identity and struggle for acceptance.

And as with previous Soaring Penguin Press releases, Blessed Cure will be launched through Kickstarter later in 2022, keeping to the company’s pledge to use crowdsourcing to increase revenue for creators.

Blessed Cure by Mário César will be launched on Kickstarter this ‘spring,’ which, since this is Britain can be anywhere from next week until late July. More when we get it.
