Adult Animation Revolution: Interactive Cartoons

Cat Burglar and the forthcoming Battle Kitty are two interactive cartoon specials on Netflix. Cat Burglar is a Tex Avery inspired cartoon heist combined with a trivia game while Battle Kitty appears to be pulling more from Japanese platform games with a post-modern twist. I was really impressed by Cat Burglar which truly felt like a long lost Looney Tune and each playthrough felt different from the last.

My first encounter with interactive storytelling was with Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain and their followup game Detroit: Become Human. Japanese Dating Simulators and Visual Novels have also found a niche Western audience within college communities and YouTubers. Netflix interactive specials could be an indicator of the line between games and animation blurring in the near future.
