The Wheel turns for another actor.
Deadline reports Killing Eve vet Ayoola Smart will appear in a recurring role as Aviendha in The Wheel of Time‘s second season. According to the character description, she is “a Wise One of the Nine Valleys sept of the Taardad Aiel and one of the three lovers of Rand al’Thor.” Rand (Josha Stradowski) is one of the program’s key characters. Guy Roberts, Arnas Fedaravicius, and Gregg Chillingirian were also recently added to the cast. Production on the second season is currently underway.
The series, which debuted last November, is based on the fantasy novel cycle by Robert Jordan. It follows the travels of Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), a member of the Aes Sedai sisterhood. Their mission is to find the reincarnation of a legendary hero who will either save the world or plummet into darkness. Moiraine believes she has found the champion within one of five young people from the Two Rivers. Intending to bring all of them back to the sisterhood’s citadel for questioning, the plan goes awry as a darker force also interested in finding the Dragon Reborn waylay them.
The first season roughly adapts the first book in the cycle, The Eye of the World, with the second presumably taking its cues from The Great Hunt. Although, as executive producer Rafe Judkins told us last year, the series reserves the right to pull material from other novels if it fits within their goals for a given season.
The Wheel of Time will presumably return to Prime Video later this year.
