It’s All Real In A Teaser For ‘Paper Girls’

by Erik Amaya

After being in development for some time, Amazon’s adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chaing‘s Paper Girls will finally stream next month. And if this this trailer is any indication, the comic book’s trippiness will be maintained along with the use of purple.

Per Amazon’s description of the program and the teaser, it all beings in the wee hours after Halloween 1988. Four girls on their paper route — Erin (Riley Lai Nelet), Mac (Sofia Rosinsky), Tiffany (Camryn Jones), and KJ (Fina Strazza) — get caught in the crossfire between warring time-travelers and end up in 2019. Facing their older selves and contemplating what their lives will be like in the 21st Century, the four search for a way to get back to their present, even as they try to outrun a militant faction of time-travelers known as the Old Watch. In order to survive, the girls will need to overcome their differences and learn to trust each other, and themselves. The series also features Ali Wong as the grown-up version of Erin, Nate Corddry, and Adina Porter.

Curiously, the series will use the binge model for its first season, with all eight episodes becoming available when Paper Girls debuts on Prime Video July 29th. It’s an interesting strategy and we wonder if it will succeed when the Amazon model evolved into a three-episode premiere followed by a weekly rollout. Perhaps it is an experiment. Indeed, some recent Amazon shows like Outer Range and Night Sky have toyed with different release patterns. Maybe something about Paper Girls is unusually binge-able.
