Commentary: Linking ‘Solar Opposites’ With ‘Rick And Morty’

Fans are always curious if shows created by the same person will ever crossover. This is especially true when they’re very closely aligned in terms of genre and theme. It’s hard to imagine two series that check both of these boxes more than Solar Opposites and Rick and Morty, each created by Justin Roiland. Of course, the programs are owned by two different parent companies; Solar Opposites streams on Hulu whereas Rick and Morty is on Max. But still, there’s a lot to analyze about these two shows possibly existing in the same universe.

Rick and Morty is about a brilliant yet insane inventor (Ian Cardoni) who lives on Earth with his wife’s family. He is an interdimensional criminal who is constantly going on adventures both to other dimensions and outer space. By contrast, Solar Opposites also largely takes place on Earth, but it centers on a group of aliens who hoped to terraform the Earth into a new homeworld for their people after their own planet was destroyed.

From a purely practical standpoint, it’s hard to imagine both of these groups of characters existing on Earth at the same time. After all, in both instances, there are global events that completely transform Earth’s population, so it’s hard to imagine both sets of characters never even referencing these catastrophes. However, the two shows are extremely linked from a thematic standpoint, specifically in their approach to space. Both shows depict outer space as a wacky and zany place, filled with strange aliens and constant warfare. It’s perfectly plausible to believe that the outer space adventures depicted in these shows can exist in both as they have nearly identical tones. So fans can surely imagine a hypothetical crossover even if it is highly unlikely. Until then, the many Easter eggs hidden in the background will have to do.
