According to Patrick Stewart, the final season of Star Trek: Picard is not a reunion of Star Trek: The Next Generation cast, but a “necessary job of rescue, safety, and hospitality when under threat.” And from the teaser released during the annual Star Trek Day, it appears the gang will need some help from Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) to complete that mission.
Beyond the return of TNG characters, the season will also explore Seven’s journey as a Starfleet officer while Raffi (Michelle Hurd) investigates the “criminal underbelly” in the galaxy.
The Picard tease was just one part of the 2-hour livestream celebrating all things Trek. Other highlights included Picard‘s return date — February 16th, 2023 — a tribute to the late Nichelle Nichols, a very strange look at upcoming Star Trek merchandise and behind-the-scenes look at Star Trek: Discovery‘s fifth season.
Beyond Picard‘s return next year, Paramount+ also used the occasion to announce Star Trek: Prodigy will return with new episodes starting October 27th. That series will also see the return of The 4400‘s Billy Campbell as the Outrageous Okona, a character he played in the second season of The Next Generation back in 1988. Additionally, the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds confirmed the series will return in 2023, which will see Carol Kane joining the cast as the Enterprise‘s new chief engineer.
The current Star Trek series in rotation, Star Trek: Lower Decks, streams episodes every Thursday on Paramount+.
