by Tito W. James
Another year means another year of great anime. So whether you’re a long time otaku or are interested in diving into anime for the first time, here are some shows you should look out for this year.
NieR: Automata
Based on the hit video game, NieR: Automata takes place in a far future where androids fight against aliens. The game explores complex philosophical themes like existentialism. With the success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners the bar for video game adaptations has been raised. Hopefully, the NieR: Automata will appeal to fans old and new.
Ayakashi Triangle
Exorcist ninja Matsuri spends his days fighting monsters called ayakashi to protect his childhood friend Suzu. But when an ayakashi cat shows up, Matsuri gets turned into a beautiful girl. The anime series is based on the manga by Kentaro Yabuki (To Love Ru). Fans of gender-bending ecchi comedy won’t be disappointed.
Oshi No Ko
When a doctor in the countryside meets his favorite teen idol in the worst possible way, the gears of fate are set in motion. Oshi No Ko explores the dark underbelly of showbiz in this shocking new thriller. This is a series where it’s best to go in cold. Manga readers already know that the story could become a phenomenon.
Undead Unluck
Fuuko brings extreme bad luck to anyone who touches her. When she meets a man who can’t die named Andy, they discover that their powers complement each other. So begins the unlikely friendship between an unlucky girl and an undead guy. Those looking for a unique twist on the Shonen genre should check this out.
Hell’s Paradise
In Hell’s Paradise, a group of ruthless criminals accompanied by feudal executioners must journey to a mysterious island in search of the elixir of life. But not all is as it first appears. Alliances will be formed and morals compromised, as the most dangerous warriors in Japan compete in a Battle Royale on an island overrun with ancient monsters.
Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead
Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead follows a 24-year-old office worker who receives a new zest for life when the zombie plague breaks out. A comedic take on the zombie apocalypse and an exploration of “carpe diem,” Zom 100 looks suprisingly fun.
Chained Soldier
In a world where a fruit grants superpowers only to women, a high school boy becomes the slave of a domineering demon hunter. From the creator of Akame Ga Kill, this new series should satisfy fans of action ecchi harem. Get ready, strap in, and submit to your mistress this year!
