A Marvel-less Summer? ‘The Marvels’ Moves To November

The Marvels flies past another release date.
Walt Disney Studios president of marketing Asad Ayaz revealed Friday morning that the film, which has had several release dates, is moving out of the summer months to November 10th of this year. He also revealed the movie’s spiffy teaser poster:

The date change reinforces the company’s recent media messages about slowing the pace of Marvel releases, limiting its theatrical output to just three films for the year and, seemingly, two Disney+ series. But with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 bowing in May, this means theaters will go without a Marvel movie through the midst of summer for the first time in a long while. For those still invested in the crosstown rivalry, the release window is effectively ceded to DC Studios, whose The Flash and Blue Beetle are slated for release in June and August, respectively — although now it is possible one or both films will shift release slightly to fill the gap left by Marvel.
On the TV front, recent reports indicate only Secret Invasion and the second season of Loki will make it to the Disney streaming platform this year, which is something of a relief considering the marathon of series debuts last year. Other programs originally intended to stream this year included Echo, Ironheart, and Agatha: Coven of Chaos.
Creatively, the slower pace can only be a net positive as it means a longer runway for effects work and greater creative oversight at the script stage for upcoming projects. On the business end, it also means reduced expenses as Disney braces for leaner times. And, naturally enough, fans will have more chance to anticipate upcoming releases instead of dreading an endless stream of content.
The change also suggests subsequent Phase 5 and 6 features may also stretch further into 2026 and, possibly, 2027. The 2024 film schedule still retains four films while the only 2026 release scheduled is Avengers: Secret Wars, the end of the current Multiverse Saga. It’s easy to think Deadpool 3, Thunderbolts, or Fantastic Four will move further away as Marvel and Disney alter their plans.
Meanwhile, the summer won’t be completely lacking for Marvel content as either Secret Invasion or Loki will stream on Disney+.
