‘Redemption Reapers’ Review — A Stunningly Dark And Challenging Tactical RPG

When the trailer for Redemption Raiders dropped a few weeks back, it definitely caught our eye here at Comicon. It was even more intriguing to hear it is developed by industry veterans behind some of the most recent popular games.
The story takes place in a fantasy world beset by a demonic threat known as the Mort. They decimate and pillage both defenseless hamlets and grand armies alike. One of the few resistance groups is a small collective of mercenaries known as the Ashen Hawk Brigade. This band of once questionable repute are on a path of redemption as they confront the evil that is assaulting the kingdom.
Redemption Raiders is a visually impressive game. It’s filled with stunning cinematic cut scenes that bring extra life to the narrative. The darker setting and ravaged towns help match the tone and play up the horror elements. There is the expected dip in graphics during the tactical gameplay, but it’s detailed enough to catch every blow and strike on the battlefield. It’s a real bloody good time.
You begin with two members in your party, but as you progress, more units join. Each is unique with their own specialized weapon and specific skill set. The RPG elements provide a variety of customization depending on your approach. There is a desire for a greater selection of playable character types, but the high degree of personalization regarding each unit does compensate for the limited options.
The strategic gameplay of Redemption Raiders is challenging and fun. There is an emphasis on teamwork and placing your battle units in the correct positions to maximize attacks and damage. There is even a level of greater interaction than other turn-based tactical RPGs involving specially timed button pressing for these support attacks.
The only real drawback during campaigns is that the NPC ally AI is horrible. It makes some real suspect decisions that baffle the mind and cause unneeded complications. Luckily, the majority of missions do not include them, so it’s only a minor gripe.
Overall, Redemption Raiders is a stunningly dark and challenging tactical RPG
