When brilliant, altruistic, Lunella Lafayette (Diamond White) accidentally brings a dinosaur to the Lower East Side, she finally has the brawn to match her brains and protect her community. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is an animated adventure comedy series inspired by the 2015 comic book by writers Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder and artist Natacha Bustos.
The Moon Girl animated series is cut from the same cloth as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Entergalactic. Characters express themselves with emoji-like thought-bubbles and the whole show is peppered with comic book flavored pop-surrealism. The creative team has embraced formalism utilizing stylized editing and limited animation to great effect. The use of jazzy commercial bumpers is a nice touch that showcases the creator’s attention to detail and anime influence. Sharp-eyed viewers will also spot the homages to Naruto and Dexter’s Lab.
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur shines in its art and design, but the cartoon isn’t merely style over substance. It offers a fresh and contemporary take on homemade heroes and delivers on the unapologetic fun of Saturday Morning cartoons. To all the bright, young kids who will see themselves in Lunella — this is the show we deserve!
