WonderCon 2023: Building Pop Culture With Nanoblock
by Gary Catig
Everyone’s heard of Lego, but how familiar are you with Nanoblock? They are a different construction set designed by Kawada Ltd. in Japan. As you can tell by the name, the pieces are small and can reach dimensions of 4mm x 4mm x 5mm. It does make it trickier to build with, but with such small blocks, you can create highly detailed builds. At this year’s WonderCon 2023, we headed over to the Bandai Namco booth to learn more about Nanoblock.
Nanoblock creates sets from many different franchises. Two of their most popular licensed products are anime related. Both Pokémon and Dragon Ball Z are hot sellers. You have to appreciate the attention to detail on some of the completed sets. Just look how they depict the wild hair of Goku in all sorts of crazy angles.
If video games are more your thing, Nanoblock has got you covered. You can make figures featuring Kirby, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Sonic the Hedgehog.
But there is also a selection of non-licensed stuff as well. There are series consisting of world famous buildings as well as animals. Another fan favorite line involves pets.
You can even go smaller with the Nanoblock Mini line. These use the same type of blocks but just fewer pieces. That’s why they are tinier in comparison.
Those figures are quite small but imagine doing something at a much larger scale. This Pikachu is more for display purposes but you can only imagine how many blocks it took to make this guy.
