TV Review: ‘Superman & Lois’ Season 3, Episode 3

It’s obvious that The CW is trying to capitalize on Superman & Lois‘s success by putting Gotham Knights next to it. But all it’s doing is highlighting the differences in quality between the two shows. Superman & Lois is on a whole other level in terms of fantasy and drama. It’s not just a show that focuses on the super side of things. Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) is in the title, too, so she’s an equally important part. But unlike other superhero shows that try to showcase more melodrama, it keeps its problems realistic and within the family unit.
This week’s episode primarily dealt with the revelations from last week that Lois has cancer. Given that she’s Lois and headstrong, she misses multiple chemo appointments in order to continue her work, which gets her into trouble. Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) has to come rescue her. Also, Nat (Tayler Buck) and John Henry (Wolé Parks) wrestle with Lois’s news and how to deal with it, given that she was Nat’s mother on their world and while this Lois is different, they care for her nonetheless.
Action for this episode was limited compared to most, but it did provide some great character insights. They are all facing their own journeys and obstacles in different ways. It’s all compelling drama too as they weave together and aren’t isolated plot threads. This episode didn’t have much in terms of the greater storyline, but that doesn’t matter. A season of television is long and every episode has to stand on its own. Even though it didn’t contribute to the storyline at large, this episode proves that Superman & Lois is a strong show because it can deliver on multiple levels of storytelling.
