It’s All A Dream In ‘The Flash’ Season 9, Episode 7

This week’s episode of The Flash exists for one reason and one reason alone: to give a Supergirl character a proper send-off. It did provide some sort of characterization for two other characters, but that could have happened with a much better plotline. Instead, this episode felt a lot like filler as it didn’t move the overall season anywhere towards its climax. Instead, it offered Nia Nal (Nicole Maines) — aka Dreamer — a chance to return to the screen and display some growth. An opportunity unavailable to character and performer since Supergirl ended.
The episode kicked off when Nia had a dream involving Iris (Candice Patton). She traveled to Central City to meet the star journalist, and the two of them end up sucked into a dream world. Each of them had to decipher an obstacle that was in their lives. This meant Iris had to know what path to take in life while Nia accepted that giving up control is also an important skill as Dreamer. Meanwhile, Khione (Danielle Panabaker) had to combat the fact that Mark (Jon Cor) wants her to be Frost when she is in fact her own person.
Bottom line: this does not feel like the final season of a show that’s been on the air for almost a decade. There was a lot of tension in the first few episodes with the Red Death (Javicia Leslie), but as expected, things dropped off a cliff because they climaxed way too quickly. Right now, the show feels like it’s treading water in order to get to the final big story arc. That’s not what’s supposed to be happening in a final season. Things should have been paced far better to deliver tension every step of the way. It was nice to see Dreamer on screen again before this universe ends, but the circumstances weren’t right.
