Webcomic Weekly: Kristyna Baczynski – ‘I’m just a goblin wearing chapstick’

by Richard Bruton

Webcomic Weekly, sometimes weekly, most times not, but always containing some fabulous online comics for your enjoyment. This week, Kristyna Baczynski’s wonderful comics…

I’ve shown you some of Kristyna Baczynski‘s work here at Comicon with Retrograde Orbit back in 2019. That I described as…

a beautifully done work, the two-tone artwork a delight throughout, the storytelling relaxed and yet powerful. But, it’s the way Bacynski deals with the pertinent themes of immigrant life and that sense of displacement felt by those ripped from their homes that stays with you. Like the best sci-fi always has, this tale of a distant world and alien cultures tells us so much about our world today and her empathy and understanding of the events rings so true.”

But there’s plenty more from Baczynski to enjoy online, which is why I’m here talking about her work in Webcomic Weekly. Some of it’s personal work, some of it examples of recent comics jobs, some of it examples of the work she puts out to her Patreon subscribers – but all of it is well worth looking at.

Patreon Diary Comics…

These are just wonderful explorations of the day-to-day grind, full of gentle comedy, and absolutely popping with colour and style…

Compliments – “Personal work about learning to accept compliments without deflecting or deflating them first.”

Isn’t “I’m just a goblin wearing chapstick’ just one of the best lines ever???”

Copyright Swatting:

A Visit to Viborg:

A self-published travel comic drawn on location in Denmark during a two-week teaching residency at the VIA University in Viborg.

Repository:

A personal comic about ageing minds that won the jury award at The International Comics Festival in Belgrade, Serbia.

It’s only two-pages but it’s so wonderfully evocative of a mood and captures that sadness of growing older, of things slipping away.

Oh poor George…
