C2E2 2023 Authors Give Their Advice On Writing For Young Adults

At C2E2 2023, Young Adult book authors shared their thoughts on the craft of writing for their inner teen. The following is a list of insights given by various authors at C2E2 including those present at the Tor Teen Panel and some present at individual book signings. Authors giving their advice included: Veronica Roth (Divergent series), Mark Oshiro (Into the Light), P. Djeli Clark (Abeni’s Song), Amanda Foody and C. L. Herman (All of Us Villains, All of Our Demise).
In Young Adult, authors are writing for an “age group,” not a specific genre. No matter the age, you should never talk down to your readers. In fact, most kids have BS detectors superior to those of most adults. It is advised to pick up the pace when writing YA to keep readers engaged.
Young Adult fiction often incorporates fantastic or speculative elements because they allow authors to explore heavy topics without putting off their readers. In youth, many everyday occurrences can veer from wondrous to horrifying. Fiction allows us to express the feeling of what it’s like to be alive during our formative years.
When coming up with story ideas, as writers we try to balance nostalgia and novelty. Consider what stories you loved as a young reader and how you can communicate that in a new and exciting way. Aspiring authors shouldn’t concern themselves with trends and stay true to the reason why they are writing. Remember that what you have to say matters. Embrace what makes you unique and you’ll find the right kind of success.
