Review: ‘Night Club’ #4 Takes A Turn To The Dark Side

The latest issue of Mark Millar and Juanan Ramírez’s Night Club continues to be something that land halfway between The Amazing Spider-Man and Salem’s Lot, and throws us right into the action, picking up in the aftermath of the explosion we witnesses last issue. Of course, our young heroes are vampires, so they aren’t so badly harmed they can’t recover. So, no problems there. What is the problem, however, is that this attack took place during the day and you know what that means for blood-sucking nocturnals. This superhero malarky was never going to continue without problems arising, and in this issue problems arise thick and fast. 

And, while this means another frantic issue, as our masked heroes make one wrong move after another in order to escape with their secrets and their dignity, this does mean we don’t get to drop in on the very unsavoury, but enigmatic older vampires we met last issue. Which is frustrating after going to the trouble of introducing them last issue. Maybe this issue was the one to drop them into if they weren’t going to make an appearance? 

Ramírez’s artwork continues to capture the joy and loose-limped excitement of teen superheroes, but with more elements of vampire-horror thrown in, muting the once-garish colours of three kids naively becoming superheroes. That, can only be put down t colourist Fabiana Mascolo. There is definitely a shift in the status quo of our trio of teens, and the story, as they begin to discover that being a vampire has its drawbacks.

Night Club #4 moves the narrative closer to the shadows and further away from the light, and while the elder vampires of the last issue do not show up, the reader cannot simply forget about them as we enter the last furlough of this marvellous mash-up of a comic book series.
