The Red Sonja 50th anniversary plan continues to take shape.
Yesterday, Dynamite announced a new ongoing series from Torunn Grønbekk and Walter Geovanni with covers by Shannon Maer, Jimmy Cheung, and Mike Mignola. Today, the company added three more artists to the list: Jenny Frison, Bryan Hitch, and Alan Quah.
Frison previously provided covers for part of Gail Simone‘s celebrated run with the character. Hitch, innovator of the widescreen style, makes his Red Sonja debut with issue #1 of the new ongoing while Quah is known for his covers on titles like Nightwing, Wolverine, and Red Sonja: Age of Chaos.
The new series sees Sonja on the run, evading punishment for a crime she did not commit. All the while, an “unseen force” tugs at her mind. Even as she deals with the “terrors of war and mysterious magic,” a true peril will arise from an unexpected place. Nevertheless, readers can expect “mirth, violent delights, and hair-raising action.” There may also be a surprise or two as Grønbekk and Geovani challenge the Hykranian adventurer and celebrate 50 year of her travels.
“Growing up in Norway, I was raised on mythology and stories, and it sometimes feels like it has all led up to the work I’m doing now,” Grønbekk said in a statement. “Badass, complex women are a pillar of our lore, and there are few things I enjoy as much as writing them. Red Sonja is a legend. She is the sword-wielding menace I dreamt about growing up, not only because she is capable but because she is allowed to be vulnerable.”
Red Sonja #1 is scheduled for release on July 19th, 2023.
