‘Star Wars’ And Adapting Animated Characters Into Live Action

Star Wars is a very interesting franchise. Rarely does a series have animated shows that outperform their live action counterparts. Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, and Star Wars Rebels have consistently delivered complex plot lines and multifaceted characters. And the fans have responded. They are vocal in their support of these animated shows and their characters. So much so that the characters are transitioning into other live action series. It’s a strange dynamic given that things usually work the other way around. As fans can see, the adaptations of these animated characters are being met with varying degrees of success.

Some fans were not happy with how the Grand Inquisitor (Rupert Friend) was adapted for Obi-Wan Kenobi. Even though he only appeared in the first season of Rebels, the Inquisitor was a menacing foe for the heroes. He had a sinister calm to him and a horrifying appearance that matched his proficiency with a lightsaber. Unfortunately, none of that translated onto the screen. Everything from his body frame, to his eyes, teeth, and even shape of his head were contrary to his iconic appearance.

This is in contrast to Zeb (Steve Bloom), another beloved character from Rebels who appeared recently on The Mandalorian. Zeb is a lot trickier to pull off in live action given that he’s much more alien looking compared to the Inquisitor. Aliens work well in animation, but to get the right texture translated onto the screen from CGI is difficult. Even though Zeb only had a cameo, his depiction was much more well-received than the Inquisitor. Everything matched from his voice to making his alien appearance feel life-like. It was a true translation from animation to live action, so it’s obvious to fans that successful adaptations can be done. It’s just a matter of how much effort bringing the character to life.
