Sony’s State Of Play Reveals Over 20 Minutes Of ‘Final Fantasy XVI’ Footage

Sony’s most recent digital State of Play presentation focused entirely on Square-Enix’s upcoming Final Fantasy XVI, revealing almost 25 minutes of gameplay footage.  This is the longest official gameplay reveal yet, with focuses on many different aspects of the upcoming action RPG.

Though combat was still center stage for most of the presentation, elements of the story also received a heavy focus, with the early portions of the trailer showing off sections of lead protagonist Clive Rosfield’s life both as a teenager and in his twenties. The trailer also introduces some of Clive’s allies, and the game’s home base, where players can take on other side quests and monster hunts. Lastly, the presentation ends with a surprisingly spoilery look at some of the Eikon battles, the encounters between massive summons which vary wildly depending on the summon Clive is facing.

This is the best look fans have gotten at elements of the game beyond the action RPG combat Square has been hyping up almost from launch. However, is it enough to assuage the worries of longtime Final Fantasy fans who might be worried the game is losing core elements to court potential new fans?  Probably not, but it sure is gorgeous.
