Welcome to the table!
Zine-sized gaming books are always going to catch my eye. I just think they are neat*. So when I saw Spencer Campbell‘s NOVA I knew I had to pick it up.

Nominated for two ENNIES*, NOVA is a TTRPG that takes players and storytellers on a journey into a post-apocalyptic world where the sun has exploded, leaving humanity clinging to the last remnants of light.
In this new dark and dangerous landscape, players will equip powerful exosuits called Sparks and embark on daring missions to explore the ruins of the old Earth and uncover the technology and knowledge that may hold the key to a new future for all mankind.

The real heart of NOVA is the LUMEN system, which can deliver fast-paced and action-packed combat that feels a little like looter shooter video games like Borderlands and Destiney. Each player selects a unique Spark exosuit, designed to serve a specific purpose in the new treacherous landscape of a world without a Sun. Equipped with a set of powers and abilities, players have to work together to strategically utilize their exosuits to overcome challenges and enemies that lurk in the darkness.

NOVA tosses off traditional skill and action lists. Players roll pools of six-sided dice based on how they are navigating the world, rather than what they are physically doing. This approach is driven by three attributes that describe how players might approach a task. This allows for creative and flexible gameplay that encourages players to think outside the box and adapt to the ever-changing environment.

The layout of NOVA is super stand-out to me, earning it a well-deserved nomination for Best Layout at the ENNIES. The rulebook is beautifully designed, with immersive artwork and intuitive graphics that draw players into the dystopian setting. The attention to detail in the layout not only enhances the gameplay experience and sets a solid tone for the game, but also reflects the care and passion that the creators have poured into this unique RPG.

The LUMEN system is easy to grasp, making it accessible to both new and experienced TTRPG players. The focus on action-packed combat and the versatility of the attribute-based approach adds depth and excitement to gameplay, ensuring that players are constantly challenged and rewarded for their strategic choices.
