Magnetic Press Reanimates Classic Horror With Georges Bess
by Anton Kromoff
Welcome to the table,
I love horror. Novels, comics, movies, shows. Something about monsters, ghosts, and demons just makes me happy. There was a point in my life where I was waking up before dawn and watching a new horror movie every day. I called it “Dark before Dawn” and it was just a time for me to relax, hang out with my cat, and not think about work or responsibilities or anything other than what was on the screen.

So, when I heard that Magnetic Press had just announced that it will be premiering two classic horror novel adaptations by the celebrated illustrator Georges Bess. I was thrilled. Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein will be retold in, if the preview is any indication, some of the most exquisite pencil and ink illustrations that stay faithful to the tone of the original texts.

Each oversized artist’s edition hardcover volume will showcase detailed artwork in its purest, untouched form, allowing the inks and lines of Bess’ process to shine through across the page. At over 200 pages each, these adaptations will stick to the original novels’ structure, pulling directly from Stoker and Shelley’s original texts as often as possible.
I was super stoked when I found out that Dracula‘s 224-page presentation will even includes Stoker’s original first chapter. Something that was removed from the first publication and then published after Bram’s death as the short story Dracula’s Guest.

These gallery-quality volumes will come with metallic foil elements on linen-textured covers to further capture the tactile canvas and artboard presentation of the work. Going through the preview pack I’m so blown away by how amazing they look. I can’t wait to read through them myself.
