Back in the 1980s, there was a huge gamebook boom – led by Fighting Fantasy, which I just absolutely loved at the time – and 2000 AD was quick to jump on that particular bandwagon with the Dice Man adventure game series of five magazines.
Just like the books, it’s a non-linear read, so after an introduction, you follow all the rules, roll your dice, make your decisions. Only this time, instead of moving to a specific piece on a page, you go to a specific panel.
It makes for a fascinating series of stories/games, especially because there are plenty of moments where, if you choose the wrong path, you get to see the deaths of your favourite 2000 AD characters.
It’s never been reprinted in its entirety before, but now this collection of The Complete Dice Man includes all five issues of Dice Man plus the adventure game tales from 2000 AD Progs of the period.

It’s a huge collection of tales featuring Judge Dredd, Nemesis, Slaine, Rogue Trooper, and many more, including the created just for this series, the Diceman. Oh, and there’s a certain US President along for the ride as well in You Are… Ronald Reagan. – a blistering bit of political satire with incredible artwork from Hunt Emerson.

Yes, all you need is two dice and a pencil and you’ll be off gaming your way through the world of 2000 AD in no time. You could be Judge Dredd up against the Dark Judges, you could be guiding Nemesis through the Torture Tubes, help Slaine steal the Cauldron of Blood from the Tower of Glass – it’s all down to you!
Featuring stories by John Wagner, Pat Mills, and Simon Geller, with art from some of 2000 AD’s best, including Bryan Talbot, Garry Leach, Steve Dillon, and Kevin O’Neill, The Complete Dice Man really is the definitive collection of these fantastic dice-based role-playing games.
Out on 24 May, The Complete Dice Man is available in standard hardcover or a special limited edition hardcover, signed by Pat Mills, from the 2000 AD web store.
