The Red Sonja 50th anniversary celebration continues.
While Dynamite’s new ongoing Red Sonja series from Torunn Grønbekk and Walter Geovani hits the stand today, the company will soon have two Sonja titles available for fans. While the adjective-less title is an ongoing story, the upcoming Savage Red Sonja from Dan Panosian tells a more contained tale.
In the story, Sonja must find a mysterious gem from an “ancient and crumbled kingdom.” Her solitary journey is upended when she meets a wayward prince and his betrothed trying to escape from bandits. Then a giant serpent erupts from beneath the sands. And what happens next will require Sonja to be, well, savage.
“I wanted to write a story that combines heroic fantasy and elements of mystery – but I also wanted to examine the mindset of Red Sonja,” Panosian said in a statement. “She’s not only a savage warrior but she’s also very cunning and calculated. So, creating a story that centers around a mystery seemed like the perfect way to capture both sides of everyone’s favorite She Devil with a Sword!”
Joining Panosian on art are Alessio Petillo and Francesco Segala on colors. Of the duo, the writer said, “The art pays tribute to the very best of the Red Sonja stories I grew up with. Every page is a treat for the eyes.”
Panosian will also provide covers with Frank Cho and Arthur Adams contributing covers to the first issue.
Savage Red Sonja #1 debuts this November.
