TV Review: ‘Secret Invasion’ Finale

Secret Invasion should have been something completely different than what fans received. Looking at the source material, there was so much potential. Many are insisting that it should have been a film instead of a series. Their reasoning: the concept would have been better served with bigger Marvel stars revealed as Skrulls. Instead, the series turned out to be a fairly generic spy thriller with some alien science fiction thrown in. Ultimately, the show did deliver on its promised Super Skrull battle, but it was just too little too late.
The finale begins as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) enters the Skrull compound to meet Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir). The radiation in the area is causing Fury to get sick. He hands Gravik the coveted Harvest in the hopes that he would leave Earth. After Gravik adds it to his Super Skrull machine, it’s revealed that Fury was actually G’iah (Emilia Clarke) in disguise. She also gets the powers of the Avengers. The two battle with G’iah being the victor. Meanwhile, Fury rescues the president (Dermot Mulroney) from the Rhodey (Don Cheadle) Skrull. Unfortunately, the president announces a fairly hateful policy in response that triggers global panic about the Skrulls and other aliens.
It felt strange that Gravik was so easily duped. For a character that seemed to be one step ahead of Fury the entire time, the thought that Fury would just walk into a place that meant his suicide while handing over a valuable weapon is kind of ridiculous. It could be slightly overlooked given the awesome Skrull battle that followed. But, unfortunately, the ending didn’t hit a note that felt worthwhile with Skrulls essentially on the run. Fury did have a decent ending to his love story, which should be his send off in the MCU. But since he is set to appear in The Marvels, hopefully they will be able to give him just as strong of a final scene.
