TV Review: ‘My Adventures With Superman’ Season 1, Episode 5

The first couple episodes of My Adventures with Superman were fairly slow going. That all changed this week. The universe and its characters were being introduced a bit at a time. It more or less focused on a monster of the week type format, but there was definitely a connecting storyline between them all. That thread collided with Superman in this episode as he fought Deathstroke (Chris Parnell) and whatever form this universe’s Task Force X might take.
After Lois (Alice Lee) learned last week that Clark Kent (Jack Quaid) was Superman, she spent this episode trying to uncover that secret. It puts her in direct danger as the government agents responsible for giving criminals advanced tech are trying to clean up their mess. Superman intervenes and engages in a fight with Deathstroke. It’s his hardest fight yet and he actually gets pretty bruised during the battle. When he finally heads back to Louis, she is furious that he has been keeping the secret from her. She leaps off a building in desperation and Clark saves her, thus revealing his secret.
This episode’s story exists on three different fronts. The first is Lois trying to uncover Superman’s secret. The second is Superman doing battle with Deathstroke and getting pretty hurt. The last front is all about Jimmy Olsen (Ishmel Sahid) and how he feels about his other two friends drifting away from him. What’s going on with Clark and Lois is pretty severe, but Jimmy doesn’t know that. Instead, he’s hurt by feeling like a third wheel that’s on the outside of the group. It’s unclear exactly where his storyline is headed, but he is also kidnapped in the episode’s closing moments. So the show is about to get darker than it has been.
