Adventures In Babysitting: ‘Second Coming: Trinity’ #5 Review

While things start heating up at Sunstar’s apartment, our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, makes a decent stab at setting up his Church of Jesus Christ: Latchkey Kid in  Second Coming: Trinity #5. And, like a game of soccer, it’s a tale of two halves, with the narrative swinging between the two main characters as they both deal with their own individual problems. Although, it’s Sunstar who seems to have the bigger problems with a toddler unable to control his burgeoning powers leading to some touch choices. Choices Sunstar is none too keen to take up either, bringing out a more aggressive and petulant side to our hero. 

Moving away from the soft parody of the superhero genre from recent issues, writer Mark Russell delves into the real-world problems that could very well arise when bringing up a super baby. And it’s not good. And even Jesus’ philosophising isn’t getting through this time. 

Helping land this highly emotive issue is the art team of Richard Pace and Leonard Kirk, the latter bringing a smooth style to Pace’s layouts with a keen eye for line economy, with some outstanding panels. I’m thinking of the close up of a concerned father clutching his distraught son (so powerful) as well as a great panel made up solely of juts the backs of Jesus and his disciple, Tanya, which reminded me of one of my all time favourite covers, The New Teen Titans #39. Intentional or not, it’s a great example of the expertise of the art team at work here.

Of course there is comical moments too. Like any good writer, Russell realises the need to break the tension from time to time, in this case with some toilet humour. Literally. Plus, more thoughts on faith in the modern world through a quiet moment shared over a glass of wine between Tanya and Sheila Sharp. All-in-all another well balanced issue that goes a little bit further than you regular mainstream comic in offering the reader not just some great comic book action but more thought provoking insights too.
