TV Review: ‘What We Do In The Shadows’ Season 5, Episode 6 Is The Best So Far

by Frank Martin

After several episodes failed to move the plot of the season along in any meaningful way, What We do in The Shadows comes back with a bang. Not only did this episode have a serious impact as far as the main storyline, it also had a very hilarious B-plot that included a fantastic guest star. All of these elements combined has made for one of the best episodes of the season thus far and a reminder of just how great What We do in The Shadows can be when it’s firing on all cylinders.

As Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) and Laszlo (Matt Berry) continue to conduct experiments on Guillermo’s transformation, Guillermo winds up with an injury that requires Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) to take him to a familiar doctor. While at the doctor, Guillermo is discovered as a transforming vampire and the doctor wants to put him down, forcing Nadja to break him out. Meanwhile, Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) is having trouble draining people because he’s suddenly too interesting. After getting his foot run over by actor John Slattery, the tables are turned as Slattery somehow starts draining Colin Robinson instead.

On all fronts, this was a hilarious episode. Seeing Colin Robinson become interesting is a twist that’s surprising — and that it’s taken the show this long to do it! Plus, Slattery was a fabulous guest star who dominated what little screen time he had. Plus, now Nadja has been brought in on the secret that Guillermo has been turned. This doesn’t even take into account the great aspect of the show when Laszlo conducts his science experiments. All of these various elements work together seamlessly in a very funny and meaningful episode.

What We do in The Shadows streams Fridays on Hulu.
