Review: ‘Knight Terrors: Superman’ #2 Gets To The Heart Of Clark Kent

Knight Terrors: Superman has been an examination of the core of the Man of Steel. While it doesn’t get the scares right, it definitely gets to the heart of what makes Clark Kent tick.

Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Nathan Fairbairn, and Ariana Maher show the Superman family’s worst nightmares.

Superman and Supergirl have found each other in Insomnia’s nightmare realm. The duo may have the power together to save their family from the Nightmare God. Meanwhile Aquaman and his family may be able to wake everyone up, and help the House of El save the world.

This issue is hard to sum up. While it doesn’t capture what makes a nightmare really scary, it is disorienting and unsettling as hell. Where Williamson gets everything right is capturing the spirit of its characters. Clark would absolutely help Kara work through her nightmares, and Lois being haunted by a writer’s block monster is both a good gag and great insight into her character.

The highlight of the issue though is far and away Reilly’s art. He has a clean line here that simultaneously evokes several of Superman’s most classic artists, particularly Curt Swan and Ed McGuinness. His characters are extremely expressive, even the monstrous zombie Supergirls. His art is enhanced by Fairbairn’s colors, who matches his artist style with mostly flat colors, with just enough shadow to give an illusion of three dimensional images.

Maher uses a variety of fonts that evokes classic silver age comics. She keeps her balloons small and easy to read. She also does some great sound effects, which helps the issue come to life.
