TV Review: ‘What We Do In The Shadows’ Season 5, Episode 8 — The Baron Goes Wild

What We Do in the Shadows can be a surprising show sometimes. It is without a doubt a supernatural comedy, which is actually set up as a bizarre sitcom. But because it’s dealing with supernatural creatures, it has some weirdly action-packed scenes. Although this episode started off with a pretty quirky premise, it quickly devolved into a chaotic mess. And that’s part of the magic of the show. Even though it starts off in one place, fans never quite know what’s going to happen next. It’s full of surprises, which is exactly what one would expect for a show about vampires living in Staten Island.

Laszlo (Matt Berry) is in a funk. No one quite understands why, so they decide to cheer him up by hosting a roast. It’s a very awkward situation, but things get weirder when the Baron (Doug Jones) discovers that it was Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) who set him on fire from the sun. Once the Baron discovers that he has vampire hunter blood, he goes on a mission in order to kill Guillermo, who went into hiding. The Baron thinks he succeeded, but in reality, he just killed one of Laszlo’s twisted experiments, which pretty much satisfied the Baron’s bloodlust.

With each episode, this circle of people aware of Guillermo’s secret grows. But the one person who matters the most, Nandor (Kayvan Novak), still has no clue about his familiar’s status. It’s unclear whether or not this revelation will happen in the season finale or an episode building up to it, but the show is certainly generating a lot of suspense leading towards that moment. In the meantime, there are a lot of hilarious antics and scenes. Seeing the Baron go crazy trying to kill Guillermo was quite funny and an unexpected turn of the episode. This season has been roughly middle-of-the-road. Not too great, but not too bad either. Hopefully, things will get ramped up to an extreme once Guillermo’s secret is completely out in the open.
