Rules-Lite Werewolf TTRPG Fun In ‘We Own The Night’

Welcome to the table,

I’ve always been a fan of werewolves. I think one of my fondest childhood memories is watching The X-Files episode Shapes at a very young age on a black and white portable TV that took enough D-sized batteries it could have probably powered a golf cart.

The episodes were broadcast on a night when my parents were off having dinner or something and a horrible storm had hit the city we lived in. Rain pelted down and the power went out a few times, but none of this bothered me, because the shapeshifting wolfman had me so transfixed that being home alone in the midst of a torrential thunderstorm was of little concern.

To this day, Shapes is one of my favorite pieces of werewolf media and is probably why I get excited when I see things that evoke that same kind of primordial monster vibe that that particular episode of The X-Files conjures up for me.

Right now the cool kids over at Unplaytested Presents, an imprint of Underground Oracle Publishing, have a new TTRPG offering created by Jess Pendley and Keith Pendley.

We Own The Night has players take on the role of werewolves sent by nature to destroy the necrotic forces of the undead, using this 2-page TTRPG game Illuminated by the LUMEN game system, created by Spencer Campbell.

While this is in no way associated with Spencer Campbell, I think it speaks volumes that Underground Oracle Publishing has chosen the LUMAN system to use for this experimental outing.

I dig when small games like this come to the table. It’s always cool to see what developers are out there doing for quick one-shots and pick-up-and-play tests. It feels like this is an experiment to see in what ways Underground Oracle can hack the LUMAN system and I hope this is but a glimpse at what may be on the horizon.
