Masaaki Yuasa’s Five Films Coming To Blu Ray From Gkids

Ever since the explosive debut of Devilman Crybaby director Masaaki Yuasa became one of my favorite anime creators. Yuasa’s eccentric cult-filmography is now being collected into a five-film box-set distributed by GKids. The collection includes Mind Game, The Night is Short, Walk On Girl, Lu Over the Wall, Ride Your Wave, and INU-OH.
What I love most about Masaaki Yuasa is that each his anime look different from what he’s done previously but still have his unique point of view. When most anime opt for a house style and trend-driven storylines, Yuasa was always able to deliver an anime which stood out from the crowd.
Yuasa and the animators at Science Saru and Studio 4C have consistently bucked trends in pursuit of creative art. I hope students working in every creative medium get access to this treasure-trove of films. The anime films of Yuasa are the kind of visual surrealism that we haven’t seen since Luis Bunuel and will no doubt impact cinema for decades to come.
