‘Smash!’ Covers Revealed And More Details For The Return Of Classic UK Characters

We brought you the news that Paul Grist would be writing the new three-issue reimagining of SMASH!, featuring six decades of reimagining classic Brit comics – now, more details, more art, more SMASH!
The three-issue SMASH! series begins on 25th October, with the brilliant Paul Grist – whose Kane is still my favourite crime comic ever, and whose Jack Staff is right up there as one of the best superhero series – on writing duties. Joining him on art are Tom Foster and Anna Morozova on issue 1, Jimmy Broxton on issue 2, and VV Glass on issue 3.
The advance solicitations for the series give us not just the names of those involved but also a sense of where Grist is taking this. And it sounds superb, with a six-decade-spanning romp of magic and crime, all beginning in issue 1 when Janus Stark traps a demon in a stone idol and unwittingly creates an object that, 60 years on, the King of Crooks, The Spider, just cannot resist.
On one side, we’re going to see the Spider and his Crime Syndicate plotting to snatch the statuette., and on the other, The Steel Claw and Jane Bond are assigned to halt the theft.
And that’s just issue 1!
From the art of issue 2, we get a glimpse into what happens next – with the King of Crooks trapped in Maxwell Tower after the heist goes wrong. And as you should all know, Maxwell Tower means the psychotically over-protective super computer Max and the perils of The Thirteenth Floor! Added to all this, The Spider’s now got Robot Archie on the hunt for him!
And finally, the third issue sees the action-packed and sounding so damned good series end with Cursitor Doom, Adam Eterno, and The Spider having to deal with the demonic presence trapped by Janus Stark getting free.
This all sounds, and looks, so very, very good. Grist’s writing is always a thing to enjoy and the line-up of artists on the series promise to make this a really good read. SMASH! issue 1 comes out on 25 October.
