While the Addams Family movies were big pop culture features in my youth, when it came to the small screen, the family living at 1313 Mockingbird Lane was my favorite sitcom family. The Munsters were in syndication by the time I saw it for the first time. Being a fan of the classic Universal Movie Monsters like Dracula and The Wolfman, a family made up of monster-themed people… and Marilyn the normal one, had a lot of amusing adventures as a traditional sitcom family. There was also the added benefit of being able to provide some great cultural commentary about race, religion, and acceptance, because they were unlike anyone else.

They were weird and that made them feel normal to me. I was never going to be like the other sitcom families but this collection of creatures who loved each other, went to work, and were looked at as strange but still smiled and forged ahead living and laughing and taking care of each other was a bright spot in the TV lineup for me.
