PlayStation 5 Slim Announced, Coming in November

Following months of rumors, Sony has finally confirmed the existence of their new “slim” PlayStation 5 revision, along with a release date for the new system. According to the PlayStation Blog announcement, the new console is over 30% smaller and 18-24% lighter than the original models. Of course, they look mostly the same without the original PlayStation 5 for comparison. That said, a change in dimensions isn’t the only thing different about these new consoles.
People who buy the Digital Edition of the console will be able to buy the PlayStation 5 disc drive separately for an additional $79.99, which at least offers the option for players who want to go physical at some point. Another major change is an upgrade in internal storage, with the new console featuring a proper one terabyte SSD. It’s a minor upgrade from the base model’s 825 GBs, but a welcome one nonetheless as game installs continue to skyrocket in size.
The downside though is anyone looking for a price drop can look elsewhere, as the slim model in America will be the same as the current base model at $499.99. The new Digital Edition is actually more expensive, at $449.99. This new, slimmer PlayStation 5 will be available in stores and via direct.playstation.com in November.
