The Comic Book Stars Come Out For NYCC 2023

Javits Convention Center workers are busy hanging banners for the next hopeful Hollywood hit, booth staff are practicing their sales pitches and artists are hurriedly finishing up those last-minute commissions. It must be time for New York Comic Con.
NYCC, which begins tomorrow and runs through Sunday, is the premier East Coast com, both in terms of size and prestige. While the convention typically pulls a who’s who of comic book elite, this year’s event seems even more packed – perhaps in part due to the ongoing actors’ strike. Jim Lee, Adi Granov, Adam Hughes, Bill Sienkiewicz, David Finch, Peach Momoko, Frank Miller and Geoff Johns are among the scores of artists and writers who are descending on the Big Apple.
Publishers large and small – from Marvel and Simon & Schuster to Zenescope and Mad Cave Studios – will set up books on the show floor to entice fans about their next big thing. Many will have events in their booths, including signings, celebrity photo ops and exclusive merchandise.
The Comic Mint will have several exclusive books, including a silver foil of Batman #1; ComicXposure will offer a Tyler Kirkham cover of Blowtorch Bad Roads #1; and Unknown Comics will sell a Sabine Rich Spider-Gwen Annual #1 exclusive. There are a number of pins, prints and other collectables, including Star Wars backpacks, Rugrats stickers and a Neopets lanyard. And, of course, there are Funko pops – ranging from the company’s booth exclusives featuring a heavy metal Halloween theme to retailer incentives for InuYasha and NYCC’s own Pizza Rat.
While the strike may be sharpening the con’s focus on comic books and collectibles, there will still be plenty of stars on hand. Chris Evans of Captain America Fame, Star Wars’ Ewan McGregor and Loki himself Tom Hiddleston will be on hand for main stage appearances, autographs and photo ops. Other celebs include David Tennant, Kid Cudi, Eli Manning, Susan Sarandon and Zachary Levi.
