NYCC 2023: IDW Turns To Star Trek’s Next Next Generation In 2024

Star Trek comics publisher IDW is skipping a generation with its newest series, due out early next year.
At a New York Comic Con panel session on the publisher’s Trek books, group editor Heather Antos revealed a new series Sons of Star Trek will hit local comic shops in February 24, 2024.
The series, written by Morgan Hampton and illustrated by Angel Hernandez, stars Deep Space Nine’s Jake Sisko and the Ferengi Nog, Worf’s son Alexander and Q’s offspring. Antos teased that other sons of familiar character will eventually be part of the cast.
The sons are each dealing with their own emotional baggage – from absent fathers to the fallout from the recently concluded “Day of Blood” storyline that had Alexander at odds with Worf.
“They are burdened with the legacy of the people who came before them,” said Trek writer Collin Kelly.
IDW also announced a 182-page Lower Decks graphic novel written by Ryan North and drawn by Chris Fenoglio. The book, called Warp Your Own Way, is a choose your own adventure story that has the potential to loop in such Trek favs as Tribbles and Khan. That graphic novel will be available in the fall of 2024.
“What an incredible time to be a fan of Star Trek,” Kelly said.
The publisher also spotlighted the first Star Trek: Defiant annual, written by Christopher Cantwell, illustrated by Ramon Rosanas, with colors by Lee Loughridge.
Cantwell focused the issue on Commander Sela, the half-Romulan daughter of Tasha Yar. With the help of time travel, Sela encounters her mother, who was killed when the daughter turned her in for trying to escape Romulus. Cantwell suggested that the story behind the story is more nuanced than what Trek fans have been led to believe over the years.
“This is a story that’s very near and dear to my heart,” he said.
