Review: ‘Gargoyles’ #10 Hurt On Landing

Writer Greg Weisman does well with the characterization in his scripting. His dialogue feels very believable, and sees great enhancement by letterer Jeff Eckleberry. The enhancements via lettering are mainly from sizing and bolding of text. Weisman also does a decent job with social messaging. However, the social messaging is undercut by a plot twist. This in turn will probably divide readers as to how high this issue’s quality is.

The interior art and covers G, J, and V are by artist George Kambadais. Overall the cover design is rather generic, and a bit stereotypical for a Japanese character. While the interiors features an array of settings they all have a sense of realism to them. This does well at making the more cartoonish elements feel like they have a grounding. There is also some nice use of minimalism in certain moments. Lastly, Kambadais does a great job with creating depth.

Colorists Giulia Giacomino and Giovanna La Pietra do a good job. However, certain parts look better than others.

Covers A, H, O, and P all feature an image by artist David Nakayama. There is a nice sense of depth and good proportions in the design. The colors on covers A, O, and P are accurate to the show’s versions (Gargoyles [1994-1997]). Unfortunately, due to lacking colors cover H seems to be lesser in quality. Though one can argue the same dip in quality occurs with the lack of trade dress on O and P causing them to look like prints.

Artist Lucio Parrillo provides the art for covers B, L, AND U. The only flaws in this image are arguably the eyes and definitely the size, and placement, of the moon.

Covers C, M, and W are by artist Lesley “Leirix” Li. While the image is overall nice it is arguable whether it is interesting.

Artist Jae Lee creates some high quality line work for the art for covers D, N, and T. While colorist June Chung uses a great selection of hues that are just wide enough in range.

Art team Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner provide a rather paint by numbers image for covers E, K, and S. Also the texture seems a little flat in places.

The two action figure art variant covers are F and I, and they are by artist Miriana Puglia. Cover I is debatable as to whether or not it is of lesser quality than cover F due to the lack of trade dress. Yet, the sense of depth on both versions is exquisite. Also the textures are various and seem specific to each area. Finally the coloring is very good, but the texture of the clothing on Wolf’s stomach arguably distorts it too much.

Covers Q, R, and X are by artist Ken Haeser. The image is stylistic in a 1990s way, and almost every visual element is generic.

Packager/editor Nate Cosby does a mostly good job. However, Cosby does fail to notice that the cover gallery does not properly credit Jae Lee for cover T.
