TV Review: ‘Doom Patrol’ Season 4, Episode 10 — Everything Is Tired

It’s strange that the final season of Doom Patrol is dealing with the team getting old and tired, because that’s exactly how the show feels at this point. After last week’s episode, which had a breath of fresh air by reinvigorating the show’s craziness with a musical episode, this week feels like a step back. The show’s pacing has slowed down again, allowing for some deep reflection and character growth. But these characters have already come a long way in four seasons. Right now, the villain is much more interesting, as is the threat she poses. There’s also another threat coming from the butts, but it all feels very chaotic and disorganized at this point, which makes for a very peculiar experience.

After freeing themselves from Isabel Feathers’ (Charity Cervantes) musical world, the Doom Patrol returns to their aging selves. They all feel like they are dying, which leaves Rouge (Michelle Gomez) alone in trying to deal with the threat. Meanwhile, Cyborg (Joivan Wade) makes the decision to return to his superhero form. When the rest of the team realizes were Rouge has gone, they head to Isabel’s one-man show in order to stop her from killing Rouge. But Isabel is a god when she is Immortus, and the episode ends as she banishes the entire team to what looks like a wormhole in time.

Immortus represents a villainous threat that the show hasn’t really explored. She’s all powerful, but she’s also kind of a ditz. Her priorities are completely out of whack, which makes for some very entertaining scenes. But the show isn’t really focusing on her nor is it focusing on the Doom Patrol trying to stop her. Quite the opposite. They’ve become lethargic and apathetic to the situation, which is understandable. They are in a terrible position. But watching an episode of aging heroes brooding over there mortality doesn’t make for great television, especially if it’s a show that’s built its reputation on zaniness.
