Kobold Press Releases More ‘Deep Magic’
by Anton Kromoff
Welcome to the table,
Check this out…
I may not have been there when this particular Deep Magic was written, but I know the words. Kobold Press makes some really cool 3rd party game material for existing TTRPG systems, is working on its own systems, and currently has announced this two-book collection with what may be one of the greatest modern collections of spells and spell adjacent rule sets. I mean that this looks like it could come close to rivaling the Magica Enclyopedia, and that’s saying something!

This two-book set has some really rad stuff in it. Deep Magic 1: Unlimited Power Remastered, is a massive tome of spells for your TTRPG game with more than 600 new and revised spell caster options. It introduced the Theurge base class, blending the arcane and the divine in one caster that’s perfect for players who don’t want to dual-class but want access to more magical options.
There are 16 divine domains, including Beer, Frost, Justice, Moon, and Time. There are also 11 new arcane traditions, such as the Elementalist and the Timekeeper, 4 sorcerous origins, including the Farseer and Serophage, 3 otherworldly patrons, 3 druid circles, 3 ranger and martial archetypes, 2 bard colleges, and 2 sacred oaths Plus, expanded rules for familiars, and much more.

What is really rad is that this book is not just for wizards, warlocks, and sorcerers. Deep Magic also expands the horizons of what’s possible for bards, clerics, druids, and even rangers and paladins. It offers something new for every spellcasting class.

Deep Magic: Volume 2 is a sequel to the spell-filled Deep Magic: Volume 1 and further expands on that first volume. Volume 2 features over 400 new spells as well as a Witch base class that while not perfectly balanced for my witch-themed homebrew game, really works well at a table for players who do not have the constraints on magic we do.
There are also 19 new subclasses, 3 new backgrounds. 14 styles of spellcasting, 15 magical grimoires, 3 new downtime activities. 10 spellcasting NPCs to add to your campaign and over a dozen tables, from descriptions of magical effects to reverse summoning quests, to the odd effects from drinking an old or badly brewed potion.
Together this collection really provides some amazing opportunities to make magic your own as a player or storyteller. You can score this set in print or digital at the link.
Until next time, Kobold Press really knocks it out of the park with these books. One of the biggest losses for me in this golden age of TTRPG is that they stopped putting out their Warlock Zine. That one is easily one of my favorite things in production and the loss of that publication still stings.
