‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ Vs ‘Willy’s Wonderland’ — Story Vs Action

It’s a weird phenomenon that similar movies are often made. Doesn’t matter if it’s superhero pictures, films about natural disasters, or even horror flicks, — a lot of movies have similar plots. When a pair of alike films are released in quick succession, a debate between the two of them becomes inevitable. With the release of Five Nights at Freddy’s, there would obviously be comparisons to Willy’s Wonderland starring Nicolas Cage. After all, Willy’s Wonderland is, in many respects, a direct knock-off of the concept. But regardless of which one horror fan prefers, analyzing the many different choices between the two films can draw a lot of contrasts.

The basic premise shared between them is fairly simple. An individual is forced to spend the night in a creepy and shut down family fun restaurant featuring a wide range of evil animatronics that like to kill people. For Willy’s Wonderland, the mechanisms were possessed by a cult. In Five Nights at Freddy’s, they were possessed by the ghosts of children killed by the restaurant’s owner. However, Five Nights at Freddy’s also has another plot involving its protagonist, who is traumatized by being responsible for the kidnapping of his younger brother years earlier.

Through the protagonist’s character arc, Five Nights at Freddy’s tries to expand itself into a full-fledged story. Each character is going through their own arc that ebbs and flows along with the plot. There’s a deeper theme to the story involving dream theory and connections with the afterlife. Willy’s Wonderland doesn’t have any of this deeper meaning. Instead, it focuses on allowing Cage to do what he does best as a silent protagonist tasked with taking out the haunted machines one by one. So while viewers may certainly have a preference as to which film they prefer, it’s interesting to see that both films took the same premise and merely put a different emphasis on their storytelling. In terms of Five Nights at Freddy’s, they focus more on telling a full-fledged story while Willy’s Wonderland centered more on action and a faster pace.
