Jumping On: One-Shots, Series Premieres, And New Story Arcs For December 6, 2023

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.

With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, December 6, 2023.

Hellboy Winter Special: The Yule Cat #1, Dark Horse

Matt Smith writes and draws this chilling wintery one-shot where Hellboy travels to Reykjavik to investigate a giant beast that has been spotted and missing children in the area. Please tell me this is the infamous Yule Cat of Icelandic lore. Hellboy, Christmas, and cryptids. This one checks all the boxes. 

Batman / Santa Claus: Silent Knight #1, DC

This one is billed as a four-part crossover event, from the creative team of Jeff Parker, Michele Bandini, and Alex Sinclair. Batman, Santa, and other DC heroes will team up to investigate a brutal crime in Gotham City in the days leading up to Christmas. They also tout a not-so-jolly Saint Nick. “A brutal two-fisted holiday tale of hope” starring Santa sounds absolutely unhinged, and I need to know more. 

Creepshow Holiday Special 2023 #1, Skybound

Put the fear in your cheer with Creepshow Holiday Special #1. Sounds like this one is two shorts in one book, with The Christmas Man by Daniel Kraus and Jonathan Wayshak, and Package Thief from James Asmus and Letizia Cadonici.
