‘Believer’ Is A Mind-Bending Korean Thriller
by Tito W. James
Believer follows an investigator who, in an effort to bring down the boss of Asia’s biggest drug cartel, conspires with a lowly member of the gang seeking revenge against the boss. The film has everything I love about Korean thrillers; bizarre characters, unpredictable plots, and surprising moments of horror and humanity. Each scene introduces new characters, raises the stakes, and takes unexpected turns. Believer is a film best watched without any prior knowledge — when the credits rolled, I had to pick my jaw back up off the floor.
I would however, advise against watching Believer 2. It’s less of a sequel, and more like taking Believer’s third act and trying to stretch it out into its own film. The result really doesn’t work and undermines the strengths of the first film.
Believer is currently streaming on Netflix.
