Puss in Boots the Last Wish
While Puss in Boots: The Last Wish technically came out last year– I wasn’t the only one who brushed off the film as a pointless Shrek spin-off. Surprisingly, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is the best film in the Shrek franchise and arguably the greatest film to ever come out of Dreamworks. Puss in Boots is a Grimm’s fairytale come to life in gorgeous illustrated color. The character of Death is the best villain we’ve had in an animated film in years. I hope this marks a bold new chapter for the Dreamworks films that follow in the next decade.
TMNT Mutant Mayhem
TMNT: Mutant Mayhem embraces the indie comic aesthetics unique to the Turtles and delivers a vibrant teenage adventure. The Ninja Turtles have never looked better and the film’s soundtrack is Oscar- worthy. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem sets up new baddies for the four brothers to fight in the future and I look forward to seeing where the creators will take us.
Nimona
Nimona creatively combines a cyberpunk future world with a subversive fairytale. ND Stevenson’s graphic novel has finally gotten the adaptation it deserves. Nimona has been well received by fans old and new. The success of the film is an important step in embracing LGBTQ themes in animated films.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse deepened and enriched the characters of Miles and Gwen while taking our heroes to new heights. There are more worlds to explore, villains to fight, and heroes to team up with. Watching the two films back-to-back shows how meticulous the creators are about building their grand narrative. If Beyond the Spider-Verse builds on the strengths of the previous two films we may have the greatest superhero trilogy of all time!
