CES 2024: ‘3 Body Problem’ Genre-Bending Trailer And Activation

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have a new project releasing later this year on Netflix. The creative team that won Emmys while working on Game of Thrones co-created the upcoming 3 Body Problem alongside writer-producer Alexander Woo.
The series is inspired by the science fiction novel of the same name. It centers on “how a young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day.”
The trailer for the series was released coinciding with the first day of CES. Though it might seem peculiar that a television show would be promoted at a consumer technology expo, 3 Body Problem actually fits into the entire vibe. A key narrative component is the use of a gaming headset that transports various characters into an unknown world.
In addition to the trailer, 3 Body Problem also had an immersive experience on the exhibit floor. Participants put on headsets similar to ones found on the series to view the trailer in VR. More surprising, after removing the headsets, they were transported to a desert landscape and treated to an interactive show providing more insight about the world and what is truly going on. Overall, a very fun activation — particularly after the VR portion.
Woo said, “Future tech is a big theme of the show of what are capabilities are now. What are potential capabilities in the future, and what the capabilities of someone else might be at this moment. With that in mind, doing an experience like this at CES is very much on theme with one of the major themes of our show.”
3 Body Problem premieres March 21, 2024 on Netflix.
