Jumping On — Series Premieres, One-Shots, And New Story Arcs Dropping On January 17, 2024

by Brendan M. Allen

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.

With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

Featured Series Premieres, One-Shots, and New Story Arcs:

James Bond 007 #1, Dynamite

It doesn’t get more iconic than Bond. James Bond. Her Majesty’s (Is it His Majesty’s now?) favorite double-0 is back with a brand new mission, Codename: STALDOVA. A Cold-War relic, the compound Staldova has long-buried roots with MI6. When it mysteriously reappears, the agency assigns their best operative (rhymes with Pond) to get to the bottom of things.

Writer Garth Ennis and artist Rapha Lobosco collaborate to bring you Part One of Your Cold, Cold Heart, marking Dynamite’s 10-year anniversary of picking up the 007 comics license.

John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America #1, DC

Writer Si Spurrier and artist Aaron Campbell had a kickass run on John Constantine: Hellblazer back in ‘19 and the band is back together for Dead in America

Constantine (As The Hellblazer himself once said, it rhymes with ‘fine.’) has cheated death… again. Except his heart isn’t beating and his body is decaying. He, his friend Nat, and his son Noah are on the run stateside, wanted for murder. In an odd twist, Dream needs John’s help. Something terrible has taken root in the US of A, and it’s using sand from Dream’s pouch to impose its will. The Hellblazer is gonna need some help from someone… or… some… Thing?

The Colonized: Zombies vs Aliens #1, Image

Aliens. Zombies. I don’t need to hear any more. Take my money.

Okay. Fine. Otherworldly threats converge in the secluded Carbon Falls Collective. A second generation doomsday prepper and off-the-grid-er, Huxley deals with loss and pushback against his plans for a disconnected, fully sustainable community. An alien shows up and reanimates the town’s dead. Something about ATF, and… come on, already! Aliens and zombies! Throw in the world’s third largest ball of twine and a gift shop, and I’ll never leave.
